The idea

Southern Vermont has more than its share of genuinely unsettling history, and in October we go looking for it after dark. The Jeeps run in full costume, the route strings together old burying grounds, a documented haunted inn and a few stretches of road that locals still avoid at night, and every stop comes with a story we can actually source.

The Bennington Triangle is real, at least as a folklore phenomenon — a run of disappearances in the 1940s and 50s that never got a satisfying answer. We drive its edges, tell you what the records actually say, and let the woods do the rest of the work. No jump scares, no actors in the bushes. Just true accounts told well in a very dark place.

The vehicles get decked out for the season: fog lights, cobwebs, a soundtrack, and a level of commitment that our guides take far too seriously. It works for teenagers, works for adults, and works surprisingly well as an unusual date night.

Highlights

  • The edges of the Bennington Triangle
  • A colonial burying ground by lantern light
  • The back road locals still will not drive at night
  • A documented haunting at a historic inn

Good to know

  • Recommended for ages 10 and up. Atmospheric rather than gory.
  • October weekends are the busiest stretch, so get in touch early — especially for Halloween night.
  • Dress warmly. Vermont after dark in late October is colder than you expect.
