The idea

No fixed itinerary, no script, no gift shop. Four hours on dirt roads with a guide who grew up here, stopping at whatever is worth stopping for: the sugarhouse mid-boil, the cheesemaker who sells out of a cooler on the porch, the swimming hole nobody posts about. This is the tour we would give a friend visiting for the first time.

Vermont has about 8,000 miles of unpaved road and most of the state that matters is on them. This tour goes where the conversation goes — if you get interested in the dairy operation we passed, we turn around. If the light is doing something remarkable over a field, we stop and stand in it for a while.

Our guides live in these towns, which means the stops are relationships rather than arrangements. The farm we visit is a neighbor. The general store owner will remember your guide by name. You will end up somewhere we did not plan on, which is the entire point, and you will leave with a much better sense of the place than any structured tour delivers.

Highlights

  • Sugarhouses mid-boil during the spring run
  • Swimming holes and river bends off the map
  • Small-batch cheese and cider makers
  • Whatever the guide decides you need to see

Good to know

  • Bring some cash. Farm stands and honor-system coolers do not take cards.
  • No two of these tours have ever been the same. That is the product.
  • Works beautifully as a first-day-in-Vermont orientation to the region.
